CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Nine low-income women have gained the skills necessary for employment as they graduate from the Innovative Alternatives for Women Program at 2 p.m., Oct. 26 at the Zion Olivet Presbyterian Church, 134 Cannon St.
The women completed a 12-week program where they received vocational and life skills training. The program is coordinated by the Medical University of South Carolina College of Nursing and Zion Olivet Presbyterian Church in conjunction with the Enterprise Community and numerous local businesses
The graduates learned job skills, financial management techniques, business and social etiquette and other skills needed for success in the work world.
"This is our seventh graduating class and brings our total number of graduates to 70," said Dr. Sandra Brown, executive director of the project and member of the MUSC nursing faculty. "Ninety-two percent of our graduates have found employment, and 16 percent have enrolled in college."
